- I'm a writer, teacher, cyclist, and a musician who doesn't practice very much, which means I'm only a pretend musician. Melville once wrote, "Wonder ye then at the fiery hunt." That's my motto, I guess. My books include two novels, The Right Man for the Job (1997) and The Fire Gospels (1998), and two memoirs: Lummox: The Evolution of a Man (2002) and Heft on Wheels: A Field Guide to Doing a 180 (2004). In May of 2012, Rodale Press will release Bike Tribes: A Field Guide to North American Cyclists, with illustrations by Danica Novgorodoff. My short fiction and essays have appeared in Best American Sports Writing 2010, Esquire, GQ, Men's Health, and other magazines, and I have been a contributing writer with Bicycling magazine for a long, long time.
